Description	: A circuit with 64 years of history! Watkins Glen surely is one of the most famous racing venues of the United States. Opened in 1956 as a short 2.35 miles (3.78 kms) circuit in upstate New York, this permanent track comes to replace the former road circuits, used from 1948 to 1955. Hosting sports cars races of USRRC, USAC Road Racing Championship and others, Watkins Glen was chosen in May 1961 to host the United States Grand Prix of that year in October. It was a immediate success, the Grand Prix cars found a permanent home in the U.S. for is annual race. Since the crowds at the circuit grew in the 1960s and more international events came to Watkins Glen, like the World SportsCar Championship in 1968 (helding the 6 hours of Watkins Glen) and the Can-Am Series in 1969, the circuit was improved and extended soon. In 1971 Watkins Glen got a new track section, known as "The Boot", a sequence of fast long sweeping turns after the Back Straight, the Chute, Toe and Turns 8 and 9. The pit straight was changed, realocated to a new straight built before the former last turn. The circuit was extended from the short 3,780 meters to 5,400 meters (3.35 miles). Alongside with the track improvements and expansion, the circuit became famous for its blue guard-rails, installed since 1971. Few years after the track revamp, two tragedies hit the United States Grand Prix at The Glen: in 1973 Franois Cevert was killed in a practice crash in the Esses (Turns 3 and 4), when his Tyrrell-Ford came below a guard-rail. In the following year, the struggle for the 1974 Formula 1 Championship was overshadowed by the tragic death of Helmut Koinigg, also killed after came below a guard-rail in turn Toe (Turn 7). For 1975, a small chicane was installed in the Esses of Watkins Glen, between turns 2 and 3, to slow down the World's fastest cars in that critical sector of the circuit. For 1979 Indycars began to race in Watkins Glen, with a annual CART race there. The Formula 1 stayed in Watkins Glen up to 1980, when in 1981 the circuit administrators bankrupted and the circuit closed for two years. Formula 1 and CART never returned to The Glen.
In 1984 the circuit was bought by Bill France Sr, who choose to open again for the 6 hours of Watkins Glen, now a IMSA GTP round. For 1986, France's main series, NASCAR Cup (Winston Cup in those years) came to Watkins Glen for the first time, and a permanent date on the schedule was given to The Glen, to become one of the few road courses to held annual NASCAR Cup races since than, in the short track layout (3,949 meters, of 2.45 miles). The "Inner Loop" chicane was built in 1992, after another tragedy hit The Glen: J.D. McDuffie, a veteran driver died during the 1991 NASCAR Cup race, after hit the barrier in Turn 5 (The Loop), the fast sweeping right-hander turn in the end of the Back Straight. The chicane was built few meters before that turn, to prevent fast approaching of that fast corner.
In 2005 Indycars returned to The Glen, now under IRL sanction, and remain up to 2010, coming back again in 2016 and leaving after 2017. A interesting race happened in 2009, when Justin Wilson drove his Dallara-Honda to the chequered flag for the Dale Coyne Racing first Indycar victory, after more than 2 decades of that modest team. In current days, The Glen is home of a annual NASCAR Cup race, a NASCAR XFinity race, and IMSA SportsCar Championship with the traditional 6 hours of Watkins Glen. A classic!
This GP2 circuit was improved, fixing the track lenght (the v.1.0 and v.1.1 were more than 150 meters longer!), new scenery textures and new cc-line (by rremedio).
This is the current longer circuit layout, with "The Boot" sectors and "Inner Loop" chicane.
